A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience for 16 to 24-year olds. It differs from an apprenticeship in that it only lasts up to 6 months, candidates are not paid and they are not required to gain any specific qualifications.
The real aim of a traineeship is to give a young person the skills and experience they will need to build a successful future career. The hope is that, following a traineeship, they will be better equipped to progress onto an apprenticeship, or further education. Currently, lots of young talent is slipping through the net because they do not understand the application process or have the skills necessary for the workplace, traineeships were created in the hopes of avoiding this.
There are three main elements to a traineeship:
- Work Preparation Training: this may include CV writing, interview preparation, skills development and local business and sector information.
- English and Maths Support: where required this is provided by the training organisation.
- A High-Quality Work Experience Placement.
The work experience placement is the most important element. It must be well structured and at least 100 hours long. Placements also have to include pre-agreed content and objectives which are aligned with the trainee’s interests and aspirations. Aside from this, traineeships can include flexible additional content, which could take the form of a vocational qualification. All training costs are met by government funding.
Once the young person has finished their traineeship with your company, you should try and offer them an interview for a position within your business if one is available. If not, you must provide an exit interview and with meaningful written feedback to help them secure an apprenticeship or job somewhere else.
