WorkLife Balance

Maintaining a good work/life balance is not easy. This is especially the case for people who have their own business, or who are eager for the business that they work for to succeed. However it's important to have a good work life balance if you want to remain healthy, both physically and mentally.

There is nothing wrong with working hard and it's usually seen as a good thing. However, some people find it difficult to "switch off" during time spent outside of work. This is when problems with physical and mental health can occur. If you want to stop this from happening to you, here are some tips that you should find useful.

Learn to manage your time effectively

Time management is a very important skill when it comes to ensuring that you have the right work/life balance. The good thing about time management is that it works in the same way whether you are managing work time or leisure time. It's all about being organised and prioritising what has to be done as opposed to what could be done, time allowing.

Being able to manage your time well means that you should be able to switch between work and personal time more easily. If you are not good at time management it helps to start using a to-do list. This is a list of everything that you need to do, or want to do. It can be used in work and at home.

Priority items should always be at the top of the list with less important items further down. As each item is completed you simply need to tick it off. Using a to-do list helps you to keep on track with important tasks both at work and when you are away from work.

Make the most of nearby amenities

If possible, you should choose a place to work which is close to amenities. This is often easier to do if you work for yourself, as you can choose an office space, coffee shop, whatever your general workplace may be, that is in an area which is close to facilities such as shops and banks.

Being close to these amenities helps you to save time. For instance, if there is a day nursery close to where you work, dropping off and picking up your children can easily be done without having to make a time-consuming detour.

Another example of amenities saving you time is that being close to shops allows you to do your shopping during your lunch break instead of having to use up your leisure time.

Make sure that work and personal life are completely separate

We live in a world where technology makes it easy for us to stay in touch all the time. This can be a good thing but it can also cause problems. For instance, you do not want your kids to be phoning you when you are in work. You also do not want your boss to be phoning you when you are on leave.

Make it clear to your family that you will not answer calls in work unless it is an emergency. You also need to inform your boss that you will not answer work calls outside of your working hours except in emergency situations. People need to learn to be able to manage without contacting you.

Look after yourself

This is something that we all forget to do from time to time. We get caught up with everyday life and we forget that we need to eat properly, rest and be happy.

Each day, you should make sure that you do not skip meals and that you eat as healthily as possible. You should also make sure that you get the amount of rest that you need. Taking care of yourself in this way makes it easier to strike a work/life balance because you have enough energy to dedicate to both your work and your personal life.

Do not be afraid to ask for help

If you find that your work life/balance is not as it should be, and you are feeling stressed or anxious as a result, you should speak to someone as soon as possible. You could speak to a family member, friend or your boss at work. After all, they want you to be happy and healthy. If you are happy at home then your family benefits and if you are happy at work your boss benefits as you are more likely to be productive.

If you do not feel as though you can speak to a family member, friend or your boss then make an appointment with your doctor. They should be able to make sure that you get the help that you need.

Fortunately, many businesses are starting to recognise how important the work/life balance is. This should make it easier for you to manage your work/life balance. Remember that it's important to be organised and that you need to always take care of yourself.
